Two new developments in DeKalb County will feature Publix grocery stores.
Construction is already underway at “Perimeter Marketplace” in Dunwoody, where a 25,000-square-foot Publix will anchor the new shopping center, according to a statement from Atlanta-based developers Branch Properties.
In Tucker, developers plan to build a new shopping center near the corner of Hugh Howell Road and Mountain Industrial Boulevard. Publix plans to move from a nearby shopping center down the road into the new retail complex, which will be called “Hugh Howell Village,” Branch said.
Perimeter Marketplace, located along Ashford Dunwoody Road near Meadow Lane Road, will include other restaurants and retail storefronts; Branch had previously not announced which grocery store would anchor the center. City officials approved the project last year and later voted to award the developers an estimated $2.3 million in tax breaks over 10 years. The project involves paving over a stormwater pond on the site that was previously home to three restaurants.
In addition to the new Publix, Hugh Howell Village will include 35,000 square feet of retail shops in five new buildings.
“From an investment perspective, this is a very good deal for us because of the site’s proximity to I-285, which is less than 4 miles away,” Jesse Shannon, the chief investment officer of Branch Properties, said in a statement.
With the coronavirus pandemic disrupting the economy, developers said they feel confident in investing in supermarkets, since grocery stores have remained busy.
“While other types of retail stores have been temporarily shuttered, grocery sales remain strong. Supermarket tenants continue to pay rent, which helps keep these centers afloat while we wait for the rest of the retail sector to reopen,” Shannon said.
