Police believe a man whose car collided with a Gwinnett County Public Schools bus Wednesday fell asleep at the wheel.

The school bus was traveling north on Callie Road near Archer High School around 5 p.m. Wednesday when the driver of a 2011 Nissan Rogue traveling south veered into the oncoming lane in a “near head-on position,” Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said Thursday. No children were on the bus at the time of the crash.

“The driver of the Nissan may have fallen asleep while driving,” she said. “DUI and speed are not believed to be factors.”

Police did not identify the driver, but Pihera confirmed the SUV driver was injured in the crash and transported to Gwinnett Medical Center.

The driver was cited for failing to maintain a single lane.
