One police department in north Fulton County is taking steps to educate and train its residents on how to respond in an active shooter situation.

On three separate dates in March, the Johns Creek Police Department will host free classes for citizens.

The first two dates are March 13 at Johns Creek United Methodist Church at 11180 Medlock Bridge Road, and March 20 at Perimeter Church at 9500 Medlock Bridge Road. The third date, March 27 at Johns Creek High School, is reserved for teachers and school staff.

The classes are completely free, but registration is required. Visit Eventbrite.com for information.

The class is based on the ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) from Texas State University.

This training is not intended for young children and parental guidance is highly recommended, police said.
