Demolition has begun to revitalize vacant properties in three Westside Atlanta neighborhoods. After a kickoff ceremony on Sept. 21 the work began for the Westside Security Plan.
The neighborhood revitalization plan focuses on increasing security and police visibility, while also deterring crime.
Developers will install cameras, and security patrols will be assigned to the neighborhoods, but officials say the most exciting part of this plan is the housing. The plan is to build 35 houses in the English Avenue, Vine City and Pittsburgh areas for police officers and community leaders.
The Atlanta Police Foundation has created new opportunities for officers to purchase homes in strategic neighborhoods throughout Atlanta, to increase police visibility and enhance engagement between APD and the citizens they serve. Secure Neighborhoods offers sworn APD police officers affordable options and incentives to purchase a home that has been renovated or built from the ground up.
The Secure Neighborhoods program is focused on officer and recruit housing initiatives as well as increased police visibility through security patrols. Residents and visitors must be able to live in their homes, enjoy the city and feel secure, without undue concern for their safety and APF is committed to developing programs that include residents and partners to help make Atlanta safer.
The Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Police Foundation organized the project, with help from the Westside Future Fund.
