One of Peachtree City’s K-9 officers is now officially off duty. On Thursday the City Council approved the retirement and “surplus” of Maik, whose veterinarian recommended that “due to his current health, not be recertified for patrol work.”

The dog is being transferred to the personal custody of his current handler, who will assume all future care for him but must notify the city if the dog were ever to change hands again. Selling police dogs to non-law enforcement personnel is considered a liability, so it is customary for K-9 officers to remain with their human partners.
