Parking deck collapse in Midtown

On Tuesday morning, two large trucks carrying a crane and other equipment arrived on the scene.

On Tuesday, tow trucks were slowly removing some cars from areas of the six-story garage that were deemed stable. Cars that were in danger of falling were being secured with ropes.

Four stories of the Centergy Parking deck at Abercrombie Place and Spring Street collapsed Monday afternoon. Searchers have so far have found no one injured in the structure.

Bartow County Fire Sgt. Kerry Howell takes a rehab break Tuesday. Firefighters reached the scene at 12:28 p.m. Monday and some have not left since.

Rescue personnel are continuing to shore up the structure. The area resembled a makeshift construction site Tuesday morning as carpenters cut 4-by-4 posts, which firefighters carried into the structure to erect shorings capable of supporting 120,000 pounds apiece.

Crews continued to look for victims on Tuesday. They were using cameras mounted on long poles in their search.

Search operations continue using dogs to sniff out any possible victims. "We've had dogs run through the rubble pile twice," said Atlanta Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Steven Woodworth. "At this time, we have not had any hits from the dogs. However, due to the depth of the pile, we will continue to run the dogs through."

After the collapse, cars sit in a jumble on the bottom floors.

Crews work to shore up the structure on Tuesday. The garage, about one block north of 5th Street, houses cars for several businesses, including L.A Fitness, RBC Bank and Georgia Tech. It has 1,415 parking spaces. Thirty-eight cars were damaged in the collapse.

A portion of the parking deck gave way on Monday, plunging several levels of cars into the building's basement.

Ladder trucks were on hand Monday as rescue personnel responded to the collapse.

Emergency crews gather near the deck at 11 p.m. as they wait to hear whether the garage is safe enough to enter.

"Operations have been hampered somewhat by the discovery of new structural issues," said Atlanta Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Anthony Davidson, citing "possible cracking and stress."

Officials said they expect "a 24-hour operation" and that it could be two days before workers are allowed to retrieve their cars.
