Heavy rainfall in recent days could cause an Oconee County dam to breach, which would trap people in their homes, according to sheriff’s and fire officials.

Residents of homes on Briar Lakes Court were being advised to leave late Tuesday afternoon to avoid being trapped, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said. About 10 homes could be in danger, and firefighters and deputies were going door to door to notify residents of the potential risk.

"We do not think there is any danger to other areas from this," the sheriff's office said in an alert posted on Facebook.

An engineer was working to siphon water out before more rain falls, the assistant fire chief said.

More rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz.
