Norcross children with disabilities will soon have new playground equipment that meets the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Norcross City Council recently approved $62,385 using the 2017 Recreation SPLOST fund to replace playground equipment at Rossie Brundage Park, 350 Autry St.
The existing playground equipment is several years old with signs of decline. The city’s Public Works, Utilities and Parks Department recently installed ADA components at Thrasher Park and Summerour Park and would like to extend these features to Rossie Brundage Park.
The approved plan, to be installed by GameTime of Longwood, Florida, has six activities at ground level and includes transfer points, allowing children access to other activities. Four of these activities can be enjoyed by children in wheelchairs, encouraging all children playing in the same vicinity to play together. The Sensory Wave Climber is a unique feature and also inclusive.
Additionally, there are auditory, visual and tactile features available on both sides. The Sensory Seat incorporates a high backset and neck support, added seatbelt, and spinning activities that are a well-known benefit for children with autistic characteristics.
