Twenty-two tornadoes ripped through Georgia earlier this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The string of twisters began late Sunday and lasted into the early morning hours Monday, killing eight people and destroying dozens of homes. All but two of the tornadoes were in North and Middle Georgia.

Georgia typically averages about 30 tornadoes a year, according to Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns. In 2017, 42 tornadoes struck Georgia within a 48-hour period, Channel 2 reported.

The recent storms killed seven people in a Murray County mobile home community. An eighth person was killed when a tree fell on a house in Bartow County.

In Upson County, a tornado is blamed for picking up a house and dropping it in the middle of a nearby street.

Forecasters predict another round of severe weather could hit North Georgia this Sunday evening.
