Residents who need help paying their Atlanta water or sewer bill can learn about ways to get aid at four upcoming events this month.

The city's Department of Watershed Management offers financial and plumbing assistance to low-income residents who are having trouble paying their water and sewer bills. Customers can attend the Care and Conserve program events to meet with representatives to determine if they are eligible.

In May, Atlanta City Council approved a vote to write off more than $9 million in unpaid water and sewer bills that city officials said were uncollectible. The bills had all been delinquent for more than a year and came from more than 280 customers stretching from Buckhead to Lakewood.

Attendees must bring documentation to complete an on-site application for assistance. The required documents and eligibility rules are listed online, and more information is available at 404-546-3419.

No appointments are necessary for the following events:

• Thursday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 72 Marietta St. NW

• Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 261 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. NW

• Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 241 Pine St. NE

• Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 51 Senoia Road in Fairburn

In addition to help with water bills, the program also helps eligible residents with plumbing problems and installing water efficiency tools.

Landlords with properties that have the water bill in their name and duplexes and triplexes with a single meter are not eligible for assistance.
