A 42-year-old motorcyclist was killed Thursday after crashing into a MARTA bus in East Point, a spokesman for the transit authority said.
The bus was traveling northbound on Washington Road near Janice Drive about 5:20 a.m. when the motorcyclist crossed the center line of the roadway and struck the bus head-on, MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris said.
Eddie Harris, a passenger on the bus, told Channel 2 Action News the accident happened so quickly the bus driver didn’t have time to avoid the motorcycle.
Harris said his first thought was to check to see if the man was moving.
“So I got out and responded, ‘Are you OK?’” Harris said.
The victim, who was pinned under the front of the bus, did not respond and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The bus driver was taken to Atlanta Medical Center South for mandatory testing.
“Four customers were aboard the bus at the time but no injuries were reported,” Harris said.
The victim’s name has not been released.
The investigation into the crash temporarily shut down a portion of Washington Road.
