Mom, daughter die after incense apparently sets Clayton home on fire

A woman and her daughter died from a fire at their Clayton County residence that apparently started from burning incense, authorities said.

The woman, 47, and her daughter, 23, were pulled Thursday from the blaze in cardiac arrest, said David Vazquez, spokesman for Clayton County fire.

Both were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and placed in intensive care, but did not survive.

The woman’s three other children, a 13-year-old and 7-year-old twins, escaped by jumping out a second-story window of the home in the 600 block of Redlands Drive, Vazquez said.

The teen told investigators his mother liked to burn incense to ward off evil spirits, and liked to place the incense outside the children’s rooms, Vazquez said. Apparently, the burning incense got knocked over and started a carpet fire in the hallway.

Officials have not released the identities of the woman and her daughter.
