The Milton City Council has approved using $1.4 million in green space bond funds to acquire six parcels totaling about 21 acres on the southwest corner of Freemanville and Birmingham roads.

The council on Monday, Jan. 7, approved the purchase of the land from Residential and Commercial Equities LLC. The acquisition is now in the due diligence period before closing, and Milton’s intent is to use the property for future green space, a city spokeswoman said.

According to the purchase agreement, the property consists of Lots 1 through 6 of the Belmont Farms Subdivision. Milton has 90 days to perform due diligence, such as conducting geotechnical and environmental testing, including soil borings; and to generally inspect and survey the land.

The city also may, prior to closing, hold a public hearing and reveal the details of the purchase in an open forum. Closing must take place within 30 days of the end of the due diligence period.
