Officials debate tax for transportation projects

There is not unanimous support in Fayette County for a proposed regional sales tax to fund transportation projects in metro Atlanta.

The proposal, known as HB 277, will collect sales tax from metro counties to pay for transit projects within the region. A joint board of Fayette county and city officials met Tuesday in the first of a series of meetings.

“HB 277 is a totally flawed bill and I am going to vote against it until someone can change my mind,” said Peachtree City Mayor Don Haddix.

Fayette County Commission Chairman Herb Frady agreed but Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele thinks the bill is viable.

“It’s not a perfect bill but it is a bill the legislation can pass that the governor will sign,” he said. Kathy Jefcoats for the AJC
