Thanks to a $3.6 million government grant, MARTA is upgrading buses used on one of its busiest routes in DeKalb County.

The transit authority said Tuesday the money would be used to replace 40-foot diesel buses with 60-foot compressed natural gas buses on Route 121. The route connects riders to the Avondale Station and the city of Stone Mountain, traveling along Ponce de Leon Avenue.

MARTA didn’t say when the buses would be in service, other than that it would be soon.

The grant comes from the Federal Transit Administration's Bus and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, or GRTA, was also awarded $3.6 million for upgrading its park-and-ride lots and construction of a new operations and maintenance facility off I-20.

"As we build out More MARTA across the region, we will continue to partner and enhance existing service options with the jurisdictions in our core service areas," MARTA General Manager and CEO Jeffrey Parker said.
