The Marietta Fire Department has trucks that douse roaring flames with unbelievable amounts of water, electronic monitors to prevent smoke inhalation and years of training with the latest equipment.

But one of the best things the department says you can do to keep your family alive in a house fire involves a pen and paper beforehand.

Marietta Fire sent out on Thursday, during National Fire Prevention Week, a printable grid for you to draw an escape route out of your home regardless of how it's laid out.

The department suggests marking two exits to your home in case of emergency, and practicing the routes twice a year.
