A 57-year-old man was shot and killed while walking down the street in the Kirkwood neighborhood Friday afternoon, but police still don't have a suspect or a motive.
Atlanta police Maj. Keith Majors identified the man Friday night as Everett Collins.
Collins was walking to a neighbor's house around 1:30 p.m. when he was shot near the intersection of Ridgedale Road NE and Norwood Avenue. Witnesses told police Collins was talking on his cellphone when a man, armed with a gun, approached him.
"Some of the neighbors heard him arguing with an individual," Meadows told reporters.
Meadows told Channel 2 Action news detectives believe that argument was the reason for the shooting.
Beyond that, police said they don't have a motive.
Friday's shooting was in the same street where a man was shot and wounded while mowing his grass in August 2009. Kenneth Hagen was shot three times in his torso by a man demanding money. Hagen spent five weeks in the hospitial.
An 18-year-old, Terrance Hambrick, was charged in the shooting. Robbery was the motive.
Collins' shooting on Friday was in the 2070 block of Ridgedale Road. Hagen's was in the 2100 block of Ridgedale.
Rhonda Young told WSB TV Collins was coming to her house when he was shot.
"I just hope they realize the mistake they made," Young told the television station. "God gives life. You don't take it away.
"This crime has to stop," she said.
