Man rescued from collapsed trench

Emergency crews from the city of Milton and Forsyth County extricated a construction worker trapped in a collapsed trench.

The trench collapsed about 1:15 p.m. at a construction site in the Hampshires subdivision off Freemanville Road. A man had been digging a sewer drain. He is in the upper left of this photo.

The victim, whose name was not immediately being released, was conscious and buried up to his waist Monday afternoon, said Lt. Shawn McCarty of the Milton Police Department. In this photo, rescue teams prepare to pull him out.

The victim was removed at 3:49 p.m. after a Forsyth County vacuum truck sucked up dirt and soil around the man. He was removed on a stretcher wearing a white construction helmet.

The construction worker is freed and about to be taken to the hospital.

The trench where the man was trapped is in the upper left behind back hoe. The victim is at lower right being prepared for transport.
