A 26-year-old man with a disability has been convicted of killing the “boyfriend of his former love interest,” the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Sanchez James, who is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair, was sentenced to life in prison following a June 2017 shooting.

At that time, James hid in a wooded area along Troy Street near Washington Park while waiting for Keisha Bussey, 39, and Roderick Billups, 40, to pass, a press release said. When they appeared, James reportedly started asking questions about their relationship and brandished a gun after Bussey said she’d been dating Billups for about a year, after she and James broke up.

James fired multiple shots, hitting Billups in the arm, head and back. He was dead by the time Atlanta police arrived. Bussey was shot in the stomach, but survived.

An officer canvassed the area, found James and arrested him. James was in a wheelchair after being shot in 2016, the DA’s office said.

Retired Senior Judge Jerry W. Baxter presided over the case.
