A local family is grieving after police said a 6-month-old baby was bit and killed by his babysitter’s dog in North Carolina.

Police is Salisbury, a city northeast of Charlotte, said in a statement that Jacari Long was at his babysitter's house Tuesday when she went outside to clean the backseat of the car so that her and Long could leave. The infant was then bit by the sitter's boxer-pitbull mix in the living room, police said. He was airlifted to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

On a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral costs, Avnah Long said the child was her grandson. She was listed as living in Stone Mountain.

“My heart is broken as I am writing this... I am just shattered to pieces to even have to ask for support of funds to help with the burial of my 6-month-old grandson,” Long wrote. “Our family would appreciate any support given this go fund me at this time... this is such a devastating and sudden tragedy to our family.”

Animal control took custody of the dog and police are still investigating. Officials have not said whether the babysitter will be charged.
