The Lawrenceville City Council recently approved the purchase of two new 2016 Tahoes from Nash Chevrolet for the police department. The price is $29,830 each for a total of $59,660. The purchase will be made using asset forfeiture funds. The state contract for these vehicles is $33,330 each, but Nash Chevrolet wanted to sell the vehicles at a discount to reduce inventory. The resulting discount saves the city about $7,000.

The police department gains asset forfeiture funds by seizing cash and other assets from individuals that have committed a crime. The goal of the asset forfeiture program is to disrupt and dismantle the financial structure of criminal activity.
