Two recreation areas at Lake Lanier will remain closed to public land and water access through the Memorial Day weekend; one is still recovering from the spring storms, and the other, because of limited staffing and a lack of park volunteers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced.

West Bank Day Use Park is temporarily closed to ensure public safety as repairs continue to undo the damage of heavy rains and flooding; a reopening date will be announced later, the Corps said. Sawnee Campground, temporarily closed due to a lack of staffing, is scheduled to reopen June 13.

“The safety of all visitors to Lake Lanier is our priority,” said Chief Ranger Chris Arthur. “We have many other day use areas still available for recreation and encourage everyone to practice good water safety at all times.”
