Open alcohol containers now are allowed in Kennesaw’s Central Business District by a recent 5-0 vote of the City Council.

However, the Council decided 5-0 to delay the establishment of the East Park Entertainment District until a business in that location receives a certificate of occupancy and a business license.

The East Park District involves a $240 million investment for 55 acres of townhomes, retail shops, restaurants, a park and a three-story hotel to be completed by 2022, according to Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling from his State of the City presentation in January.

The adjacent Creekside development will recreate the 1890 façade of the original Kennesaw School/Martha Moore School as the centerpiece of the project to include retail, townhomes, restaurants, offices and breweries.

Kennesaw Zoning Administrator Darryl Simmons wrote in a December letter to the city’s business and property owners, “Establishments that are licensed to serve alcohol by the drink could allow patrons to carry one such beverage in a paper or plastic cup outside of the establishment on pedestrian walkways within the Entertainment District.”

Business owners in the downtown district have the option of deciding whether to allow the serving of alcoholic drinks in open containers for removal from their establishments.

If they do so decide, the cup size can be no larger than 16 fluid ounces and hours are 5 p.m. to midnight on weekdays and 11 a.m. to midnight on weekends.

Several more restrictions apply to this entertainment district.
