A man was severely burned on most of his body when he caught fire pumping gas at an Atlanta station Thursday.
The man suffered burns on 80 percent of his body and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford said. He remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon.
The incident was reported at a Texaco in the 200 block of Clifton Street.
Witnesses helped the man remove his clothes, Stafford said. Firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire and treat the victims’ burns.
His name has not been released.
Officials are working to determine what caused the fire, Stafford said. He said the gas pump did not explode.
“We don’t know exactly what happened, but there was some gas involved,” he said. “We don’t know what took place when (the fire) ignited.”
