R.T. Jones Library in Canton plans to add 50 laptop computers and do away with its 25 desktop computers in coming months.

Sequoyah Regional Library Director Susan White said she and other librarians visited the public library in Monticello, Ga., which has made a similar switch, and everyone loved it. It is much more useful and convenient to check out a laptop and carry it where you need to in the library rather than have to sit at one of the designated desks, White said. It will also save space, as the desktops and the tables they sit on can be done away with.

The switch is taking place as an addition is being built onto the main library in Canton. It will cost about $25,000 to buy the computers and other equipment, White said.

Each laptop will be outfitted with a device that will sound an alarm if someone tries to take it out the door. White expects the new laptops and system to be functioning in September.
