A water treatment facility in Johns Creek has been renamed the Tom Lowe Atlanta Fulton County Water Treatment Plant in honor of the county commissioner who represented North Fulton for 40 years.
The board of the Atlanta-Fulton County Water Resources Commission recently dedicated a new sign outside the plant, which opened in 1991. Lowe served on the initial water commission in 1986 and was instrumental in the plant’s location and construction in Johns Creek, county officials said.
“Thanks to Commissioner Lowe’s expertise in civil engineering, he looked into his crystal ball and recognized the need for a water treatment plant to serve the North Fulton area for years to come,” said Fulton Chairman John Eaves.
Lowe was the longest-serving commissioner in the county’s history, first elected in 1974 and retiring in 2014. At the time of his retirement, his district included Buckhead, Sandy Springs and part of Roswell. He died last year at the age of 86.
