DeKalb County is searching for new firefighters.

Applications will open Sunday, Dec. 29 for the county fire department's next class. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, have a driver's license and be a U.S. citizen, according to the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department.

No prior firefighting experience is necessary. However, applicants must go through a series of training, testing and interviewing.

Being a firefighter comes with perks including flexible schedules, medical and dental insurance and tuition reimbursement, the department said. Officials have not said how many firefighters the county is looking to hire, or how long the application will be open.

Recruits who do not have EMT training will spend approximately 40 weeks in the fire training academy, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported last year. Those who already have EMT training can expect to spend about 20 weeks in the academy.

The salary for a recruit during training is $39,158, the fire department said earlier this year. The starting salary for a new firefighter is $41,115. But DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond has proposed a 4% pay increase for public safety employees, including firefighters, in the 2020 budget.

Interested applicants can fill out a job interest form and set up a job alert to be notified when the application is posted on the county's career website. You can reach out to the fire department with any other questions at dcfrrecruiting@dekalbcountyga.gov or 678-406-7778.
