The Carver Market, a neighborhood grocery store run by community development non-profit Focus Community Strategies Urban Ministries, was recently vandalized.

“When we came to open Carver Market this morning, glass littered the ground. Last night or early this morning, the store was vandalized,” wrote Jeff Delp, director of economic development.

The Market means a lot to our community, Delp added. It was founded to address the food desert that exists in Historic South Atlanta (one of Atlanta’s oldest Historically Black Neighborhoods).

Additional facts:

  • Carver was founded, is run and supported exclusively by residents.
  • Carver is the only market providing fresh food and produce in a three mile radius.
  • Carver and its adjoining coffee shop, Community Grounds, are a meeting place for the entire community.

Carver Market is considered an essential service at this time of pandemic danger. It stays open for extended hours to accommodate the schedules of working neighbors. Employees are no longer viewed as simply clerks. They have become community heroes. Armed with face masks, hand sanitizer and antiseptic cleaning supplies, they bravely face the daily risks of exposure to a deadly, invisible enemy. They have become essential responders on the front-lines of a global war. A grateful community honors their courage and dedication.

FCS is seeking donations to fix the damage.
