Several schools in DeKalb County placed highly in U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of the top public high schools across the country.

DeKalb School of the Arts ranked the highest in the county, at No. 8 in the state and No. 262 in the nation. The other DeKalb schools in Georgia’s top 100 were Chamblee Charter High School (No. 29), DeKalb Early College Academy (No. 34), Dunwoody High School (No. 46), Arabia Mountain High School Academy of Engineering Medicine and Environmental Studies (No. 61) and Lakeside High School (No. 64).

"We are pleased, but not surprised, with the latest rankings from US News & World Report," district Superintendent R. Stephen Green said in a statement. "Year after year, our schools are honored and recognized for their exemplary student achievement and innovative education."

Elsewhere in the state, the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology was ranked sixth in the nation and No. 1 in Georgia. Overall, Georgia ranked 19th among the states.

In coming up with the rankings, which were announced Tuesday, U.S. News implemented a new method that assigned more weight to six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.

DeKalb School of the Arts, for example, has a 99% graduation, a 91% reading proficiency and a 90% Advanced Placement participation rate.

“This ranking is an honor and the school community is very proud of the work accomplished here through the arts and academics,” DSA Principal Susan McCauley said in a statement.
