A Lawrenceville Sonic Drive-In failed its most recent health inspection after flies, roaches and a “mold-like substance” were found, Gwinnett County records show.
The Sonic at 2208 Riverside Parkway earned a 55/U on its Aug. 27 inspection, down from an 82/B in February.
The health inspector found a “mold-like substance” inside an ice machine and a “sink filled with grease,” according to the report. The inspector also saw multiple fruit flies and roaches “in various life cycles,” according to the report.

Ice cream mix was held at a temperature higher than what is considered safe, and limes and cherries — typically used for drinks and shakes — were being held in a hand sink, the report says. The inspector saw frozen chicken being stored over fries in a cooler, which is a cross-contamination risk, the report says.
Dirty dishes blocked a sink that was designated for fruits and vegetables, according to the report, and “grease/food buildup” was found on cook line equipment.

The location’s franchisee has already started working towards fixing the issues enumerated in the inspection report, a Sonic spokeswoman said.
“The drive-in’s leadership has developed an action plan for corrective steps to take immediately and will reach out to the health department for a follow-up inspection,” the company said in a statement. “Sonic works hard to ensure every guest receives a meal that has been properly handled and prepared, and that we have processes in place to address any food safety concerns. We take pride in being a good community partner, and we appreciate the trust and confidence our guests place in Sonic every day to serve them delicious and safe food.”
Re-inspections typically take place within 10 days of a failure.
