Gwinnett County commissioners have canceled a public hearing scheduled for April 28.

The 7 p.m. meeting was scheduled to consider rezoning requests. Commissioners also canceled a March public hearing in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said the meeting was canceled to ensure all residents would be able to participate in zoning meetings at a time when much of public life has been shut down.

“If the courts are concerned about proceeding with jury trials, it seemed appropriate for us to rethink holding a public hearing in April,” Nash said. “It’s imperative that we all follow guidelines to limit in-person gatherings as much as possible during these unprecedented times, but we also must preserve the public’s right to be heard.”

Nash said the county isn't going to try to hold such meetings online. Matters that would have been heard in April will be heard at another meeting, when they again begin.
