The Gwinnett Braves announced the name of their new mascot, Chopper.

Chopper, the newly named mascot for the Gwinnett Braves, signs autographs for fifth-graders at Lawrenceville Elementary School. The team announced the mascot's name after it held a naming contest.

Chopper beat out two other names in the contest, Shadow and Pop-Up. The three final names were selected from 4,396 entries.

Students cheer during the announcement of the mascot's new name, Chopper. The team begins play next season.

Chopper was inspired by General Beauregard Lee, Ph.D., the weather-forecasting groundhog.

Jim Bennett of Lilburn, a lifelong Braves fan, submitted the winning name.
