The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is coming to the rescue of 24 South Carolina dogs displaced by Hurricane Florence.

The dogs were at an animal shelter in Dillon, South Carolina, a small town about 65 miles from the coast. Because of mandatory evacuation orders, the dogs needed to find a new place to stay, and the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter volunteered to take them.

The shelter is temporarily halting owner surrender intake in order to “ensure the successful transition” for the dogs. The 24 canines will be immediately available for adoption, according to a shelter release.

All pets are free to adopt on Fridays at the shelter, and $20 every other day of the week through the end of September. Normal adoption rates for dogs are $45 and cats are typically $30.

All animals are spayed or neutered before they go home with their new owner. They also receive a medical exam, vaccinations and a microchip.

The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. It is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
