The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted June 19 to approve a request to use $64,000 in Drug Abuse Treatment and Education funds for the county’s Henry County’s Misdemeanor DUI/Drug Court.

State law allows an additional charge to be collected on fines imposed for criminal offenses relating to controlled substances, driving under the influence, possession of alcohol by minors, and possession of marijuana. DATE funds are designated specifically to be used on programs dealing with drug and alcohol abuse treatment and education. The court is intended to reduce recidivism, resulting in financial savings for the county.

The court plans for the funds to be used for salaries and benefits for surveillance officers and a part-time case manager as well as drug testing, treatment and supplies.
