Continuing their pursuit to raise awareness and help fund research to discover a cure for breast cancer, Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta will host its second annual GET UP Fitness Challenge during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“The GET UP Fitness Challenge is a great way to fit exercise into the busy lives of our supporters while contributing to Susan G. Komen’s ‘Bold Goal’ to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in half by 2026,” said Cati Diamond Stone, executive director of Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta. “Research indicates that regular exercise can lower breast cancer risk by 10 to 20 percent, so being active is important in the fight against breast cancer.”

Supporters can sign up for classes at local gyms in the metro area. For each class registration, participating gyms will donate to support Komen Atlanta’s goals. There are activities for everyone from kickboxing to yoga, running to cycling, weight lifting to indoor rowing classes.

Komen Atlanta is also partnering with businesses to incorporate the GET UP Fitness Challenge in their company wellness programs. Another option encourages people to be active in their community, either individually or on a team, to help continue raising awareness about the impact of breast cancer and support survivors or those currently in treatment.

Komen Atlanta will have a wrap-up event at Urban Tree Cidery On at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, located at 1465 Howell Mill Road in Atlanta. Attendees can participate in trivia games and other entertainment. This event is open to the public.

With metro Atlanta women dying of breast cancer more frequently than women in the U.S., according to KomenAtlanta.org, the need for funding for those who cannot afford screening and treatment is great.
