Almost exactly two years after a Mableton father was shot to death, one of his gang-affiliated killers was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Darius Jarrell Dunn, 25 of Austell, was sentenced Thursday on malice murder and other charges in the death of 23-year-old Anthony Terrell Tavarez. Dunn was the third and final suspect to be sentenced for the Sept. 15, 2015, killing.
According to a warrant, the trio were robbing Tavarez when the shooting happened on the breezeway of the Windwood Apartments on Shenandoah Trail.
Dunn ripped “the victim’s pocket from his pants” and then “shot the victim in the back while the victim was trying to flee on foot,” according to a warrant.
When he was killed, Tavarez had a 1-year-old son and his girlfriend was pregnant with a second child. Tavarez was the son of retired Atlanta police detective Frank Tavarez.
"He was a good-hearted person, wouldn't hurt nobody," the victim's uncle, Tyrone Tucker, said at the time. "I don't know why somebody would just kill him like that. It's a terrible tragedy."
The other shooter, 32-year-old Melvin William Evans of Newton, was sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years in August.
The third person involved in the deadly robbery is 32-year-old Joshua Raphal Gore of Austell. He was sentenced in August to five years prison and 10 years probation, with credit for his nearly two years served.
Prosecutors said all three men are associated with the Gangster Disciples gang.
