Fulton warehouse fire generates massive smoke plume

A warehouse burning Monday morning in the Fulton Industrial district sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky that drifted eastward over Atlanta.

Fulton County firefighters continued to fight the blaze and its plumes of smoke.

Fulton County fire Lt. Gregory Chambers said the two-alarm fire broke out around 7 a.m.

Meanwhile, down I-20 westbound, firefighters battled a large blaze sending thick, black smoke eastward toward Atlanta. Fulton County firefighters at 25 Mendel Drive off Fulton Industrial Boulevard poured water on a warehouse containing bales of shredded carpet refuse.

Chambers said the fire was contained to the one warehouse, and no other buildings in the industrial district south of I-20 had been evacuated.

No injuries were reported, Chambers said.

The Atlanta Fire Department assisted Fulton County crews in battling the blaze.

Chuck Waldsmith, a captain with the Fulton COunty Fire Department, walks the fire line, keeping a close watch on neighboring buildings.

The fire may have been deliberately set, officials said, noting that it was the second blaze in two months at the same building.

Atlanta firefighter, Doug Hardeman tells his truckman to raise the ladder pipe flow as he cools the engine with a mist spray from his hose.

The approximately 75,000-square-foot building was still engulfed in flames at 9:15.

Asked how long it might take to douse the fire, Chambers said, "we're going to be here a long time, many hours."
