A former Fulton County jailer pleaded guilty Tuesday to obstructing justice by lying to a federal grand jury investigating the death of an inmate at the jail.

Derontay Anton Langford acknowledged he testified falsely last year when questioned about the March 2008 death of inmate Richard Glasco, acting U.S. Attorney Sally Yates said. The FBI continues to investigate whether jailers beat Glasco, 42, so badly in his cell he died from his injuries.

“This guilty plea brings us one step closer to learning the truth,” Yates said.

Fulton Sheriff Ted Jackson, a former special agent in charge of the FBI office in Atlanta, said he supports the ongoing federal investigation. “Obstructing an official investigation by making false statements is never acceptable and should be prosecuted,” he said in a statement.

Langford, 34, of Fairburn, is to be sentenced Jan. 14.

Earlier this year, a federal grand jury indicted Langford along with former jailer Curtis Jerome Brown Jr. and former deputy Mitnee Markette Jones.

Brown and Jones, who have pleaded not guilty, are scheduled to go to trial on Oct. 13. Both face obstruction charges. Brown is also charged with assaulting a inmate in August 2007.

The ongoing FBI probe has led to charges against five former Fulton jailers. In August, former jailer Earl Glenn pleaded guilty to using excessive force against an inmate and then lying about it to the FBI.
