Atlanta leaders joined the Council for Quality Growth in honoring former Mayor Sam Massell at the 2012 Four Pillar Tribute on Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center. The honor commemorates the honoree’s “significant contributions, both personally and professionally, to his or her community.” Massell, a life-long resident of Atlanta, worked in real estate, politics, tourism and association management. He is credited with establishing MARTA, developing the city’s first enclosed arena and for shepherding the creation of what is now Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta. After leaving full-time public service, Massell entered the tourism business in Buckhead. He is founding president of the Buckhead Coalition, a nonprofit civic organization.
