The Rhodes family has been making cakes in Atlanta since Magdaline Rhodes was selling them out of her home in 1930 to make ends meet during the Great Depression.

By 1934, she had her own store. Then in 1953, Rhodes Bakery moved to a location on Cheshire Bridge Road, where it still operates five days a week. Rhodes expanded to include a Roswell location in 1997.

And now, nearly 90 years after the Rhodes family started baking cakes, one of their creations is receiving national attention.

In a countdown of the best cakes in every state, the Food Network has named Rhodes' carmel cake as the best cake in Georgia.

According to the Food Network, Rhodes still uses a recipe for the cake that was created and perfected by Magdaline. Now third-generation bakers are making the delicious icing with sugar, shortening, corn syrup and evaporated milk, then dripping that icing over white cake.

When "Visit Roswell GA" posted the Food Network ranking on its Facebook page, fans of the bakery piled into the comment section, saying "I vote it best in the USA!!!" and "Love this place. They did my daughter's wedding cake about 10 years ago. Excellent!"

Both Rhodes locations are open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Roswell shop is at 880 Holcomb Bridge Road.
