Firefighters from several jurisdictions were battling a blaze Monday morning in a historic Alabama cotton mill on the banks of the Chattahoochee River.

The Langdale Mill is in Valley, Ala., across and just downriver from West Point, Ga.

Columbus television station WTVM reported at 10:30 a.m. that crews had the fire under control at the 200,000-square-foot mill, which was built in 1866.

Steve Sorrell, who owns a nearby flower shop and grew up across the street from the mill, told the AJC that the City of Valley bought the property after West Point-Pepperell shut down the mill, and currently has city offices in the building.

Sorrell said firefighters from West Point, LaGrange and from Lanett, Ala., were helping fight the blaze. He said that when he drove by the mill, he saw "tons of dark smoke, but no flames."
