Family offers $500,000 reward in 1996 murder case

The family of the man convicted in a 1996 murder case is offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to his exoneration, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Scott Davis was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Atlanta businessman David Coffin Jr., an heir to a Connecticut chemical company fortune.

Coffin, who prosecutors said was dating Davis' estranged wife, was shot at his mansion, which then was set on fire.

While some evidence was destroyed in the fire, police later lost some evidence, including the gun allegedly used in the shooting, the AJC previously reported. Davis was found guilty of malice and felony murder in 2006.

Davis' attorney, Marcia Shein, told Channel 2 that at least 70 pieces of evidence were lost in the case. Davis is appealing to the State Supreme Court for a new trial.
