The city of Fairburn will host an inauguration ceremony for Elizabeth Carr-Hurst as the city’s 18th mayor at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8 at Open Word Christian Ministries, 6250 Georgia Highway, Fairburn.

Carr-Hurst ran unopposed in November to become mayor after Mayor Mario Avery chose not to seek re-election. In a letter to residents, Avery didn’t say why he didn’t run, but said he hoped to leave the city “in good standing” for the next mayor. He had held the position for more than seven years.

Carr-Hurst was elected to City Council in 2007 and in 2009 was appointed as Mayor Pro Tem by her fellow councilmembers.

Other newly elected officials will be sworn in and a brief council meeting will following the ceremonies.
