For the ranking, analysts examined 1,000 hospitals with at least 100 inpatient beds across 11 countries primarily selected based on “standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability,” according to Newsweek.

Researchers then collected recommendations from more than 4,000 international and national medical experts; results from patient surveys and data on hospital quality and hygiene before assessing the best of the best. Hospitals were divided by and ranked within their respective countries, with 226 facilities featured on the United States' list.

Emory University Hospital ranked 25th in the U.S. as the only Georgia facility to crack the top 100. Emory Healthcare’s Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Johns Creek Hospital ranked 132nd and 133rd, respectively.

“Of all the industries on the threshold of transformation, none is more politically contentious, tightly regulated, scientifically significant or economically important than health care,” according to Newsweek.
