The long awaited Downtown East Point Streetscape Project is set to begin next month, according to a press release.

Back in 2002, the city of East Point applied for a Transportation Enhancement Grant through the Georgia Department of Transportation to beautify and transform parts of Main Street in Downtown East Point.

In April of this year, the city was awarded $1.25 million through GDOT from the Federal Highway Administration for construction of the project with a local match from the city of $312,500 for design engineering costs and right of way acquisition. Construction is anticipated to begin the week of Oct. 8 on the west side of Main Street from Cleveland Avenue to Vesta Avenue (near East Point/College Park City Limits).

The project is scheduled to be complete in May 2019.

The project includes increasing the sidewalks to 10-12 feet in width, installing street furniture, street lighting, landscaping, pedestrian improvements at intersections, and parallel parking. The contractor for the project is Construction 57 Incorporated and design engineering will be done by Southeastern Engineering Corporation. East Point’s Special Projects Coordinator, Geneasa Elias, will oversee the project and says it’s the first step towards beautifying and implementing safety enhancements to the City’s downtown district.
