Smash-and-grab burglars hit a downtown Atlanta clothing store early Wednesday, driving a vehicle through the front windows of the store.

The burglary happened around 2 a.m. at the Sports City store on Peachtree Street, just south of the Five Points MARTA station.

The thieves smashed out the front windows of the store, as well as heavy metal grates that covered the glass, before making off with high-end blue jeans and other merchandise, according to store employees who were still cleaning up the mess several hours later.

Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond told the AJC that a witness reported that a burgundy van backed through the windows into the front of the store and that three males got out and "quickly threw clothing items into the van before they left in the van."

Employees told the AJC that the store had only been open for about a month, and security cameras were not yet hooked up.
