Douglas County Firefighter/AEMT Spencer Caradine recently received international media attention when a heartwarming moment with his fellow coworkers was captured on video.

That moment happened when he was given special glasses that allow the colorblind firefighter to see colors for the first time, especially those of the American flag that Caradine said he especially had desired to see.

“The recent and overwhelming amount of attention I have received from a surprise gift by my brothers and sisters of the Douglas County Fire Department has shown me why I am proud to be a Douglas County firefighter,” Caradine said in a county statement.

“As one of the youngest members of this department, this act of love, kindness - and the overwhelming aftermath from it - was nothing I could have ever anticipated,” he said.

“This experience has given me a much deeper understanding and respect for the ‘Brotherhood’ of the fire service,” Caradine said.

“It has also made me appreciate, even more, the sacrifice of all those who commit their lives to serving others and those who have paid the ultimate price,” he added.
