A man was sentenced to time in federal prison for using ATM skimmers to steal debit card and PIN numbers from machines in Lawrenceville, Norcross, Atlanta and other cities in Georgia, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
Gogut Serban, 35, of Romania, was sentenced Tuesday to two years and two months in prison, according to a Justice Department release.
He pleaded guilty to access device fraud and aggravated identity theft on Aug. 28.

Serban used skimming devices on ATMs at Associated Credit Union locations across the metro area, the Justice Department said. The devices electronically recorded debit card numbers and used a small camera to video record the ATM’s keyboard while customers entered their PINs.
Serban used the information to create new debit cards and drained more than 70 victims’ bank accounts, the Justice Department said. He worked with co-conspirators who are now facing criminal charges in South Carolina.
In addition to the prison sentence, Serban must pay $84,760.50 in restitution.
