Prom is one of high school’s rites of passage. While it’s about dinner, dancing and being with friends, for many girls, it starts with the dress.

Strength in Stilettos was launched with the idea to give all girls a chance to have the prom experience while also advancing academics and community service for local Cobb County students. While in high school, Helena Brante, one of the co-founders of Strength in Stilettos, built the non-profit student organization to support, enhance and empower girls by promoting academic achievement and community service.

It is continued to be supported by her two sisters and her mother, Sheri.

Started in 2010, the nonprofit began hosting a Prom Dress Consignment Sale at Allatoona High School to provide reasonably priced prom dresses, handbags and shoes in hopes to make prom night a special one for all who want to attend.

The consignment sale benefits two scholarships - one for a student at Allatoona High and one student in Cobb County schools. Proceeds have also assisted leadership, foreign language, suicide prevention programs and more.

And this year’s consignment sale will take place March 12 at Allatoona High, 3300 Dallas Acworth Highway NW in Acworth. Dresses and volunteers are in high demand. Any dresses that do not get sold are donated to Becca’s Closet, a nonprofit organization that donates free prom dresses to high school girls around the United States.

“We can never have too many volunteers or dresses!,” added Sheri. “People can donate or come sell their old dresses, or even volunteer with us. It’s always a fun day to spend time with these young ladies.”

Over the six years, the sale has provided over 400 dresses, $4,000 in college scholarships and $2,500 in grants to programs.
