Alliance Realty Services comes before Decatur’s commission Monday seeking an abandonment of public property for its long-planned mixed-use development on the city’s east side. This is the project anchored by 50,000-square foot grocery, long rumored as Publix, though Alliance Managing Director Jack Wilcox said he still can’t officially confirm the store’s identity.
The meeting is 7:30 p.m. April 1 at Decatur City Hall, 509 North McDonough Street.
Monday’s procedure is largely routine. If approved, the resolution authorizes Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett to deed Grove Place and Grove Street to Alliance when it closes on the 9.7 acres between North Arcadia Drive and East Ponce de Leon Avenue. This tract includes nine businesses, several of which have been in operation for many years.
Despite protests from several East Ponce business owners adjacent to the project, and from three DeKalb County commissioners, the entire tract was annexed into the city last June, around the same time Decatur’s commission approved the project.
Wilcox said it’ll be mid to late summer before Alliance closes on the tract, then another 60 days after that before commencing demolition and site grading.
Besides the grocery, plans call for 289 apartments and two retail buildings totaling 12,000 square feet, including one 2500 square-foot restaurant.
Wilcox did say that Alliance recently resolved sewer issues with DeKalb County and can begin on its civil design.
